Suspension of work over the Autumn holidays

Did you know that you can apply for earnings-related allowance from Super Unemployment Fund if your work is contractually suspended over the holidays or you are laid off temporarily. This situation can arise for employees such as school counsellors whose work is suspended during school holidays.

A temporary lay-off or a comparable reason means a situation where the obligation to work and the employer’s obligation to pay wages have been suspended entirely but the employment relationship continues.

In situations comparable to a temporary lay-off, the employment contract must include a provision on unpaid holiday periods or the suspension of payment of wages or that the employer cannot offer work during the time period in question. You are not entitled to the daily allowance if this has not been agreed in the employment contract. If your employment contract does not include a provision agreeing on situations comparable to a temporary lay-off, you will need to send us the annex to your employment contract specifying these situations. We require the annex to the employment contract before we can process your application. The annex can no longer be taken into account after your application for daily allowance has been processed. Please note that if your employer offers you other work during the temporary lay-off or suspension of work, you need to accept the work or you will lose your right to the daily allowance.

How to apply for daily allowance

  1. First, register as an unemployed jobseeker with the TE Office.
  2. If you work full time, send the application for the period of temporary lay-off after the lay-off has ended. Include your employment contract agreeing on situations comparable to a temporary lay-off. If your employment contract does not include a provision on the suspension of work, send us the notice of temporary lay-off.
  3. If you work part-time, fill out the application for one calendar month and send it to the fund retroactively. Include your employment contract agreeing on situations comparable to a temporary lay-off. For example, your employment contract includes a provision on a suspension of work comparable to a lay-off over the Autumn holidays and you work part time. When applying, send us an application covering the entire month of October and the next application covering the entire month of November. Remember to keep your jobseeker status active throughout the time period. We will pay you an adjusted daily allowance.

In most cases, we receive information about your earnings directly from the Incomes Register. If your employer has not reported all information required by us in the Incomes Register, we will ask for the missing information after we receive your application. To speed up the processing of your application, we recommend that you include your payslips from the last six months or since your previous temporary lay-off
