Membership

Super Unemployment Fund is open to employees. By joining the fund, you secure your livelihood during unemployment, temporary lay-off or job alternation leave. The fund pays its members earnings-related allowance, mobility allowance, job alternation allowance and transition security allowance. You can be a member of the unemployment fund through your union or as an unaffiliated member.

How to join

You can join Super Unemployment Fund if you are aged between 18 and 67 and

  • you have vocational training and work as an employee in the social services and health care sector
  • you are studying for the social services or health care sector and are in paid employment
  • you are employed by a church or other religious organisation or a community that provides services in that sector and are trained as a church employee
  • you are studying to become a church employee and are in paid employment

You cannot join the fund or switch unemployment funds while you are on unpaid leave (such as maternity, paternity, parental or job alternation leave) as membership of the fund requires that you are employed and paid wages or a salary.

If you are over 65 years of age, you can be paid earnings-related allowance only if you are unemployed due to a temporary lay-off or a comparable reason or for weather-related reasons, or if you are unemployed due to an industrial action that has no effect on your own terms of employment or working conditions.

The minimum age for receiving earnings-related allowance was raised to 18 years on 1 August 2021. The change came into effect at the same time as the age limit for compulsory education was raised to 18 years. However, earnings-related allowance can be paid to 17-year-olds if certain conditions are met. A condition is that you have completed a vocational upper secondary qualification or matriculation examination or graduated from comprehensive school before 1 January 2021. In other words, you need to have completed your compulsory education.

You can also join Super Unemployment Fund without being a member of a union. As an unaffiliated member, you are entitled to the allowances paid by the unemployment fund.

To apply as an unaffiliated member of Super Unemployment Fund, fill in the form (jäsenhakemus) and send it to Super Unemployment Fund by email at jäsenasiat(at)supertk.fi or by mail to Super työttömyyskassa, PL 117, 00521 HELSINKI.

Include a copy of your diploma or employment contract in the application.

Super Unemployment Fund’s fee for unaffiliated members is 84 euros per year or 7 euros per month (in 2024 and 2023).

You cannot be a member of two unemployment funds at the same time. If you switch between employees’ unemployment funds within one month and your membership in the previous fund is valid until the date you leave the fund, any membership and employment weeks accrued in the previous fund remain valid. This means that you do not need to earn back the weeks needed to meet the employment requirement. The easiest way to switch between funds is to authorise the fund you are joining to terminate your previous membership to end the day before you join the new fund. You can give the authorisation on the application form.

Please note that you cannot join the fund or switch unemployment funds while you are on unpaid leave (such as maternity, paternity, parental or job alternation leave) as membership of the fund requires that you are employed and paid wages or a salary.
